VIDA

BOGOTA, COLOMBIA

2015

A 5.000m2 leaf on the ground of a square that screams the word LIFE to remind the 457 families who have been relocated to this social housing development that they must rebuild their future together in order to move forward.

DESIGN

They have been living together for about two months. Each family comes from a different part of the country. They have nothing in common with each other: some come from the Pacific, others from the Caribbean, others from the Amazon or the mountains. The only thing they have in common is the drama of fleeing without looking back, abandoning their lands, clothes and most of their families, as a consequence of the terrible armed conflict that the country is experiencing.
It is in this context that the mural appears, validated by the neighbors and generated in a participatory manner with them and other citizens, to transform this new place in which they live by building new relationships that strengthen this new community, working to be part of this new identity.

CONCEPT

The work consists of a large leaf, built from hundreds of smaller leaves, which are assembled in such a way that the word LIFE can be read. Each of these leaves belongs to the most significant species of the different ecosystems of the country, making a parallel with the people who live in the building, symbolically representing their places of origin. Bringing them a little peace from their lands. The painting is on the floor and its perception is totally different if you walk on it than if you look at it in the building. When you are on top you only see geometric shapes and gigantic colors, but from above it makes perfect sense, representing a new beginning full of hope.
