VERSES ON THE GO

MADRID, SPAIN

2018

"Verses in passing It is a project that fills the pedestrian crossings of our streets with poetry, to accompany our walks through the city.

It was created as an initiative of the Madrid City Council, to remind us of the importance and value of poetic writing and reading, as well as the fundamental act of walking and how, through our steps, we can reclaim the urban environment.

Every day, we all traverse our own personal Madrid, often without a second thought. The vast majority of us rush into our daily routines, barely aware of the city around us, in an almost automatic journey whose sole purpose is reaching our destination. And yet, in our philosophical and literary tradition, walking, and especially leisurely walking, is a poetic act in itself. A stroll is the ideal state for literary creation and inspiration, philosophical reflection, and the appreciation of beauty. Walking the paths is healthy for our physical well-being, but above all, for our mental health.

Verses Along the Way champions the reflective and creative stroll, introducing literary creation and the surprise of unexpected discoveries into our daily walks. It has done so by asking everyone which of their own verses or poetic phrases they would like to contribute to be written on the asphalt. More than 20.000 proposals were received, and a committee of experts from the world of literature has selected the 1.100 verses that you can now find at every turn on the streets of Madrid. Poetry by everyone, for everyone, so that together we can build the city by writing and walking.
