The project “Unión” is the artistic combination of the Spanish collective Boa Mistura and the Puerto Rican artist Myke Towers. It is born from the reflection on the invisible ties that connect people and places, beyond the geographical, cultural, ethnic or social distance. Music and Art as vectors of connection that cross borders.
CONCEPT
The work is made up of 6 abstract fragments in their individuality, painted in 6 different places (Santo Domingo, Mexico City, Santiago de Chile, Madrid, San Juan and Medellín) that, together, compose the word UNION.
The project was carried out in March 2021 in the communities of La Zurza in Santo Domingo, the Copilco Housing Unit at the Issste University in Mexico City, Renca in Santiago de Chile, Cañada Real in Madrid, Río Piedras in San Juan and Commune 13 in Medellín. All of them connected through the piece. Union of countries, communities and people.
The courts are the heart of the neighborhoods. Much of the community's activity revolves around them. They are plazas, stadiums, dance halls and concert venues. For this reason, and because of their transversal nature, we use the multi-court court in each of the six communities as a support for the project.
DESIGN
The strategy is based on the placement of the six courts in a vertical format, aligned, forming a single landscape canvas on which to develop the design. We started with the word UNION duplicated in its regular and italic version, and superimposed on itself. The word reacts to the central axis of the courts, slightly darkening the lower half of them.
Based on this composition, we fragmented and adjusted the six individualities, adapting the design to the morphological circumstances of each court.
