Sisi Ni Mashujaa

Nairobi, Kenya

2016

“SISI NI MASHUJAA” (WE ARE HEROES, in Swahili) is a tribute to more than a million people living in the Kibera slum in Nairobi. We were inspired by Lesso, a type of fabric used by women throughout East Africa, and which includes a small proverb within the print that accompanies them in their daily lives. We reinterpreted this textile, using its rhythms and colors, but redefining it with a message in recognition of the heroism and resilience demonstrated by each individual in this community: “SISI NI MASHUJAA” (We are heroes in Swahili)

CONTEXT

The project is located in Laini Saba Ground, the only vacant lot in the settlement, which is used by thousands of people every day on their way to work and which, depending on the moment, functions as a football field, a market and a playground for the three schools that surround it.

Kibera's urban context consists of shacks built with adobe and zinc sheeting

Kibera is known as “Chocolate City” because of its rusty facades and roofs.

INSPIRATION

Leso or Khanga is a type of cloth used by women throughout East Africa. Its print contains a small proverb whose message accompanies them in their daily lives. There was no better tribute to all the inhabitants of Kibera than to dress the hospital in AMREF with this recognition of the courage that it takes to simply live on the streets of this magnificent community.

A typical East African book on which you can read a proverb
