On October 2, 2020, more than 4.000 people live without electricity, of which 1.800 are minors. Today, the Problem continues, although it has remained in the shadow of media and social attention.
“SEGUIMOS LUCHANDO” (we still fight) is an installation of four solar-powered light garlands, whose slogan “SEGUIMOS A OSCURAS / SEGUIMOS LUCHANDO / QUEREMOS CONTRATOS / LUZ PARA CAÑADA (WE STILL IN THE DARK / WE STILL FIGHT / WE WANT CONTRACTS / LIGHT FOR CAÑADA) demands the formalization of contracts with electricity companies so that electricity can return to Cañada once and for all.
The aggressive policies of the Commissioner of the Government of the Community of Madrid for the Cañada Real Galiana are aimed at extinguishing the flame of the struggle of the residents and generating a climate of demotivation and defeat that favors political interests.
During Christmas, Madrid has 171 streets lit up, at a cost of 3,6 million euros. 14 kilometres away, the homes of La Cañada endure winter after winter trying to avoid energy poverty with precarious self-supply systems, which barely cover basic needs for a few hours a day.
Within this difficult context, we installed the Christmas lights in La Cañada, and from the evocative imagery, we launched a strong message to defend human rights.
WORK PROCESS
The installation, approved and carried out with the support of the Platform for the Right to Light in Cañada Real and private contributions, was set up with the help of volunteers in our studio.
It consists of four solar-powered LED light garlands that hang from overhead cables and fly over the road in sector six and turn on automatically at dusk.
The project was carried out during the last days of 2021.
