“Il Quartiere secondo noi” (The neighborhood according to us)
Based on this question, a participatory process was carried out over several months with various groups in the San Siro neighbourhood (mainly young people), encouraging them to reflect on the identity of their neighbourhood through various activities. The work culminated in a mural intervention on the building that houses the town's social services.
From the dynamics with the different groups in the neighbourhood, we came to the conclusion that nothing represents San Siro more than its name, which reflects its political and sporting history, the multiculturalism and extreme diversity that makes up its social fabric today. We were struck by the feeling of belonging that exists in the community: SAN SIRO is more than the name of a neighbourhood.
THE CONTEXT
A strategic mural intervention is proposed for the Quartiere San Siro in a public building located in Piazzale Segesta.
The chosen location is particularly convenient given its location at the entrance to the quartiere.
We are faced with a free-standing building, with two of its exterior facades, facing North and East, highly visible from Piazzale Segesta.

Building before the intervention
DESIGN
We propose to intervene the facades in an integral way, with a piece that starts from the repetition of the words SAN SIRO, providing a new abstract skin of homogeneous color.

The piece extends along the two main facades of the building, a former “palazzo” of fascist architecture built in 1930.
The adaptation and refurbishment works include the construction of a second skin that serves as thermal insulation, as well as protecting the historic building. It is on this thermal coat that the intervention is carried out, preserving the architectural preexistence. The intervention extends to the perimeter wall in a continuous manner.

Design adapted to the support.
The piece is completed with a verse composed from fragments of the texts written by the young people who participated in the process.
“Il quartiere è passione, legami, spine. È case, paura del vuoto, altezza e vertigini”
(The neighborhood is passion, connections, thorns. They are the houses, the fear of emptiness, the heights and the vertigo)
