PARATGES DE PAU

Mallorca, Spain

2014

«Paratges de Pau», in english: «Landscapes of Peace» is an Intervention on the eight machine gun nests on the beaches of Es Trenc and Sa Rápita, in Mallorca.
Inspired by the poem "Cala Gentil" by the Mallorcan Miquel Costa i Llobera, we portray the Mediterranean landscape working only with white.
The project was developed within the framework of Art Night Campos

CONTEXT

The beaches of Sa Rápita and Es Trenc are located on the shores of the Mediterranean in the southern part of Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands. As a natural space, it has great scenic value, being one of the few areas of the island that remains almost untouched. In this environment there are 8 machine gun nests built as a defensive element to protect the island from a possible attack during World War II. Ultimately, they were never used for military purposes and over time they have become part of the landscape of the area.

THE INTERVENTION

We worked in white, the colour of Mediterranean architecture, directly on the worn concrete of each nest. Based on the poem “Cala Gentil” by the Mallorcan author Miquel Costa i Llobera, we selected some verses that could have meaning independently, and in some way, subtitle the landscape in front of them. We wrote on the worn concrete of each nest, thus subtitling the evocative Mallorcan coastline.

CALA GENTIL, by Miquel Costa i Llobera

About cinta de blanca arena,
que besa l'aigua de cèlic blau,
grans pins hi vessen a copa plena
olor de bàlsam, ombra serena,
remor suau...
Oh, dolç estatge de bellesa i pau!

Un aquí troba la llum més clara,
les colors vàries de to més viu;
pura delícia de tot s'hi empara,
i sol o lluna mostrant la cara,
tot hi somriu…
Oh, de mos càntics inefable niu!

Per puigs i serres s'acaramulla
frondós boscatge de verd etern,
que eixa floresta de vària fulla
la tardor trista mai la despulla,
ni el fred hivern…
Oh, Paradís que apar al món extern!

Si aquí s'acosta qualque mal día
de nuvolades amb negre estol,
sols hi duu tendra melancolía,
com una verge sense alegria
que en pau es dol...
Oh, bon refugi de callat consol!

Aquí, ben jove, pensí abrigar-hi
un niu d'humana felicitat;
després de tomba vaig somiar-hi
a on tindria més solitari

serenitat...
Oh, dolç moment; oh, glop d'eternitat!
