“Ndox du bayi yonam” – “Water never forgets its way” in Wolof, is a work that deals with the notions of emptiness and absence, and the invisible relationships created between the extraction of what belongs to one context and its integration into a completely different one. The project is part of the 14th edition of the Dakar Art Biennial.
THE SOUMBÉDIOUNE MARKET
We worked opposite the Sombédioune market, in a residual urban infrastructure where fishermen build and repair their boats before going out to sea, uniformly covering everything in the space, including one of the canoes.

Sombédioune Market.

1. PREEXISTENCE
Civil infrastructure adjacent to the Corniche Ouest road tunnel in Dakar.

2. ON SITE EXECUTION
Execution of the anamorphosis in situ.
The painting covers the entire space. We write the proverb on the walls, on the floor and on the abandoned canoe.

3. EXTRACTION
We removed the canoe, revealing the absence of its outline, its trace in place.

4. INSTALLATION
The boat was removed from the site and placed in the courtyard of the Instituto Cervantes in Dakar, creating two incomplete pieces; one of the works bears the mark of absence, of what migrated, while the other becomes a fragment alien to its new context, it becomes a sculptural piece. New psychogeographies that define again and again what we are.
