MÁSCARAS DE LA TIRANA

ANTOFAGASTA, CHILE

2016

The intervention covers around 6.000m2 of murals at the meeting point between the towns of Villa las Condes and Corvallis in Antofagasta. It begins on Vicente Zegers Street and ends on Sebastian Bach Street. It also covers the walls of the Santiago Amengual and Japòn Schools, and proposes a new urban landscape. It is part of the Participatory Paintings program of CREO Antofagasta and has been carried out collaboratively with the help of local residents and artists.

THE PLACE

The project includes the contact area between the Corvallis and Villa Las Condes neighborhoods, focusing on the walls of the Japan School and the Santiago Amengual School, as well as the facades of the houses facing Vicente Zegers, Abraham Lincoln and Juan Sebastián Bach streets.

LA TIRANA

The party of La Tirana is an Andean festival that links Pachamama with the Virgin of Carmen. Every July 16, groups from all over the country, especially from the North, gather together to dance non-stop, day and night, to give thanks for the prayers they have asked the Virgin a year before. The town of La Tirana grows from 800 inhabitants to more than 250.000 during the celebration.
The mural represents fragments of masks from the Diablada, one of the most emblematic dances.

The residents of the area are the ones who propose the theme to us through a consultation. In the town there are several dance companies that travel to La Tirana year after year. A week later, these same companies dance through the streets that we have painted in what they call "La Tirana chica".

During the process we designed about 10 complete masks, some of them proposed by local artists Basco and Lovart. From these masks we selected only the eye fragments, so that their gaze would follow them throughout the journey.

Participación

The mural was created in collaboration with more than 200 residents, including the commitment of Yamilet, Johny, Johny Jr., Marcos, Carlos, Daniel, Don Sergio and Tamara. And thanks to the talent of local artists: Camilo aka Zopa, Seba Ovnie, Marte, Leo, Paulo, Katica, Koté, Basco, Cristian, Gabriel, Javiera Aròstica, Jano, Juan Miranda, Franchesca Barrales, Mono and María Corrales.
