BAUHAUS , FINLAND

BERLIN, GERMANY

2019 - 2020

A 350-meter perimeter fence surrounds the Bauhaus-Archiv site during the three years that construction work on its new building will last.

In December 2019, when we started the first stage, we had the honor of being in charge of creating a temporary skin for what will be the new archive. As a multidisciplinary collective, our work moves between architecture, design, typography and color.

The Bauhaus and its masters are the fathers of the visual and creative universe to which we belong, and a continuous reference among us, since directly and indirectly, they have inspired many of our lines of work. In this project we have worked directly with the tools left by some of the masters of the Bauhaus.

In October 2020, we started the second stage.

PHASE 1: 2019. HERBERT BAYER & JOSEF ALBERS

TYPOGRAPHY

Moving away from our trusted fonts, we worked with ITC Bauhaus (Ed Benguiat), inspired by the legendary Bauhaus Type created by Herbert Bayer in 1926. By taking it out of scale, fragmenting it and overlapping it, the typography has been an excuse to generate geometric rhythms that accompany us throughout the journey.

Almost like a musical score.

COLOR

We have sought the palette of the work in the endless studies on the interaction of colour by the master Josef Albers. In these, Albers came to the conclusion that in visual perception, we almost never appreciate colours as they really are, which makes it the most relative medium of art. Josef Albers rejects chromatic systems, defending a method of study based on the observation of colour within its context.

PHASE 2: 2020. JOSEF ALBERS & GUNTA STÖLZL

TYPOGRAPHY

Once again, moving away from our trusted fonts, we work with an experimental modular alphabet by Josef Albers. He uses squares, circles and triangles to generate a typeface that offers us interesting possibilities when it comes to composition and superimposition.

COLOR

Gunta introduced abstract art into fabric, reflected in the shapes and colours. We were inspired by the colour range of this rug for its balance between harmony and contrast.
